Hollywood, 1942. A stagehand saddled with a bad leg, Ben Kaline would much rather be overseas fighting the Nazis than working on the set of CASABLANCA. But a German spymaster whose lair is the movie capital of the world is planning acts of sabotage so devastating they could bring the U.S. war industry to its knees. Ben may be the only man capable of stopping him--with a little help from Bogie. . .
The Devil in Dreamland eBook Ray Schultze
What's not to like about this thriller? It's got the glamour of Hollywood in the 1940s; Nazi spies; a working-class hero, and a plot that revolves around the making of one of history's all-time great films - "Casablanca."
Oh, and it has Humphrey Bogart as a co-star.
Author Ray M. Schultze has fashioned a highly entertaining noir-ish story in "The Devil in Dreamland." It's a story of an average guy working in Hollywood, not as a movie star but as a behind-the-scenes set builder, who stumbles upon a plot to damage the American war industry. Through a nice little twist, Schultz has his protagonist - Ben Kaline - meet and then become friends with Bogart who hires him as a personal assistant. When a friend of his is murdered Ben becomes a suspect, loses his job and is forced to try to find the killer on his own. The nice thing about this novel is that Kaline isn't endowed with any amazing deductive skills. He's not an investigator and he stumbles often in his search for the truth behind the murder.
Full of atmosphere, complete with more than a couple red herrings, "The Devil in Dreamland" is a sweet read and a novel I highly recommend.

The Devil in Dreamland eBook Ray Schultze Reviews
This grabs your attention in the first few pages and continues to hold your interest! Characters were very well developed...felt like i knew them. looking forward to his next book!
The Devil in Dreamland is full of suspense & kept me reading. The descriptions of the 1940's from Hollywood to Palm Springs is well researched and exciting for the reader to picture that era. The characters & plot kept my attention throughout the book. A great read!
Excellent! Mr Scultze's best book yet! Very suspenseful. A "grabber" from beginning to end.
Great plot, character development, and overall writing style. Schultze has painted a picture of California during the 40's that made me want to go back in time.
The first sentence in The Devil in Dreamland grabbed my attention, and from that first paragraph, I found this book very hard to put down. I kept saying to myself, "I'll just read one more chapter before I turn out the light."
Set in Hollywood just before Pearl Harbor the story unfolds in very intriguing ways. Schultze is an excellent writer. Like his previous novels, this book moves smoothly. He introduces new characters in a casual, disarming way. Just as you are beginning to know them there is a faint hint that they might not be who they seem to be. This foreshadowing is a particular talent of the author. A fun bonus in the story is getting to know Humphrey Bogart behind the scenes. Schultze has the fictionalilzed "Bogie" playing the good guy, then hinting that he may be a bad guy, and then ultimately... The detailed descriptions of movie sets and the process of filming make it all seem (almost) real. Schultze does have a way of making me feel that I am right there - I can see it, and feel it. Good writing, well-developed characters, plenty of suspense to keep you turning the pages. Great addition to my book shelf and to my gift list.
Loved the plot. Lots of action. The Bogie scenes were delightful. Makes me want to see Casablanca again. Well done!
This book held my attention from start to finish. I especially enjoyed reading about California during war time in the 40's. And who doesn't like Bogie. This would make a great noir film.
