In this comprehensive book, Cathy Scott and Clay Myers, with a foreword by former NBA star Bill Walton, show how service and therapy dogs are having a profound impact on the lives of military personnel injured in action. Not only do our veterans deal with physical injuries, but they often return with psychological issues that can be treated with help, companionship, and love from working canines. Through moving stories, Unconditional Honor highlights the nearly 40-year history of working dogs helping wounded veterans, the mental and physical combat traumas that are mitigated by the dogs, the selection and training of the dogs, including rescued canines, and what the future holds. Featured in the book are inspiring personal accounts of what the dogs mean to veterans, and how their lives have been forever changed and even saved since adopting canines.
In addition to the remarkable healing journeys of wounded warriors and their canines, this book showcases the various groups, formed originally to train dogs for the blind and the physically disabled that now embrace military services, that provide, at no cost, returning troops with dogs to make them whole again after surviving the reality of war.
Unconditional Honor Wounded Warriors and Their Dogs (Audible Audio Edition) Cathy Scott Barry Abrams Books
Although this isn't a true crime book, it tugged at my heart strings more than I can describe. I cried while reading the amazing stories about a handful of our wounded and traumatized military heroes. Some were near death from their battle injuries, and some with PTSD or TBI, even ones with battle injuries and PTSD. I was fortunate enough to have met a few of these vets who now have dogs. They're so positive and driven, even though they suffered unimaginable pain and trauma. Some of my tears were happy tears from seeing the vets interact with their dog companions. I guarantee anyone who reads this book will look at the photos over and over. They're amazing. Some of the dogs have been trained by inmates, which is wonderful. It saves dogs lives and can give an inmate a reason to straighten up their lives. There are so many dogs who need to be saved. Training them to help vets is such a huge step in the chain of caring for our injured vets - giving something back to those who were willing, and those who nearly did give their lives for our Country. Cathy Scott's writing style is very smooth and keeps me reading a book and not wanting to put it down. She did a fantastic job interviewing vets and writing their stories. I know I will read this book again, and I'll continue to look at the photos again and again. I highly recommend this book. Thank you, Cathy, and thank you to all of our vets and people who serve for us.Product details
